Valentine Special Thoughts – By Prashant Mukund Das

In this material world, what people generally call “love” is often nothing but refined lust. Real love means selfless giving for the pleasure of the beloved, without any expectation in return. But material attraction is usually based on the body, emotions, and temporary desires. Therefore, it begins with excitement and often ends with frustration. As explained in the Bhagavad Gita, lust arises from contact of the senses with sense objects, and when unfulfilled, it turns into anger and sorrow. This cycle reveals that material affection is conditional, not eternal love.

Valentine’s Day is associated with Saint Valentine, remembered on 14th February. Tradition says he was the first person to send a “valentine” greeting. It is believed that while imprisoned, he developed affection for a young girl—possibly the jailer’s daughter—who visited him. Before his death, some accounts say he wrote her a letter and signed it, “From your Valentine.” Whether legend or history, the foundation remains a story of material attachment.

According to the Srimad Bhagavatam, real love is eternal and spiritual—centered on the soul’s relationship with the Supreme Lord. Such divine love is free from selfish desire and never ends.

Let us rise from temporary attraction to eternal devotion.

Hare Krishna 🙏
